This is a great activity for an outside hiking day. Bring the required materials and sit outside to talk about the book and prep work and then go for a short collection hike. The regroup to talk and do some rubbings.
After completing the activity take time to ask the kids a few questions.
The exercise could be used for other badges or levels with minimal tweaking. It can also be used for a fun day outside without structure or levels.
