This can be divided by age group or adults can do some steps while younger Navigators complete the search.

Older kids/Adults

• Download the geocache app onto a smart phone from the geocaching website https://www.geocaching.com You will need to make an account, but it is free. Consider making an account for your group if that works.
• From the website, watch the “What is geocaching” video at the top of the page
• Open the app on your phone and identify which caches are near you or in an area you wish to hike.
• Select a geocache by reading the difficulty, distance, and other provided information about it.

All Navigators

• Once a geocache has been identified make a plan to head out to find it
• Review best practices for being outside.  Consider weather, terrain, distance, hiking protocol, and what supplies you will need.
• Gather at starting point and review chapter guidelines for any outing. Consider what to do if you get lost, having a “head” and “tail” for a hiking group, getting a “buddy”, listening skills…
• Create a process for what to do when the geocache is found.  Consider walking away and making up a funny noise or word to say when someone finds the geocache.  This will allow everyone in the group the fun of finding it and prevent the let down of searching for it only to hear, “It’s right here”.  Each Navigator should get to find it on their own.
• Select “Navigate” on your selected geocache to see how to get there.  Drive as close as you can and then get out and start walking.
• Once you find it, examine the contents, sign the log book/paper, and then exchange a trinket in the geocache (if there is one) and replace it with one you brought.
• Put the geocache back exactly where you found it and leave the area without disturbing anything.
• Go back to the website to document that you found it.
