Create “trail” with obstacles to navigate around using cones or other items.
For this activity, you will need a large open space such as a schoolyard or gymnasium.
Divide Navigators in small groups of 3-4 people and select a Trail Lead for each group as well as the first group member to be blindfolded. This can be done without blindfolds also.
Prepare the space for the activity by using cones to create a unique trail path for each group leading from one end of the space to the opposite side. Add in different obstacles to each trail for each Navigator to have to work their way around.
Review the four Compass Point directions (North, South, East, West) with the Navigators.
Place the groups at one end of the space spread apart from one another in front of their trail paths.
The chapter leader should place a new, personal blind fold (Navigator Bandanna or similar) on each Navigator when it is their turn to be blindfolded and to use for the duration of the game.
Trail Leads will lead each blindfolded group member across the trail one at a time by giving the number of steps followed by the compass direction (Example: Two Steps North, One Step East) and following safety protocols such as the blindfolded person placing their hands in front of them in bumper position to prevent injury.
After reaching the end of their trail, each Navigator will remove their blindfold and place it in their pocket and the Trail Lead will go back and pick up the next Navigator in his group who will be blindfolded by the chapter leader.
Once all teams have guided their members to the end of their trail, the chapter leader selects a new Trail Lead.
All groups switch trails to their right, and repeat the activity until each Navigator has had a chance to be a Trail Lead and all groups have successfully completed all of the trails.
Navigator Feedback (In a group setting follow-up on what was learned?)
Ask the Navigators what they learned from this activity.
What were their favorite parts of the activity?
What would they like to have been done differently with this activity
Sportsmanship: Have the Navigators share how it felt having their team’s support during the activity.
